A credit application, redesigned around the applicant

Applying for credit is stressful. Long forms, unexplained questions, and silence after you hit submit push good applicants away and create work for your staff. This demo shows how I'd redesign that journey.

Demonstration only. "Harbor Point Lending" is fictional. Nothing you type is saved or sent, so please don't enter real personal information.

About 6 minutes total

Before you start

This takes about 6 minutes. Have these ready so you won't need to stop partway through:

  • Contact detailsEmail and mobile number for updates
  • Home addressPlus how long you've lived there
  • IncomeYour yearly income before taxes
  • Housing costMonthly rent or mortgage payment

Will this affect my credit score? Checking your options won't. If you choose to accept an offer later, we'll tell you before anything that could affect your score happens.

About you

Enter your first name.
Enter your last name.
Enter an email like name@example.com.
Enter a 10-digit phone number.
Enter your street address.
Enter a city.
Use 2 letters.
5 digits.
Why we ask for your mobile numberWe'll text you when your status changes, so you never have to call to check. You can switch to email-only on the next screen of a real application.

In a real application, identity verification would happen here. This demo skips it on purpose. Never type a Social Security number into a demo.

Why we ask about income and housingLenders compare what you earn with what you already pay each month to find a payment you can comfortably afford. We ask once, here, so we don't come back later asking again.

You'll see your actual rate and monthly payment before you accept anything. This screen is about what you need, not a commitment.

What changed

Common patterns vs. the redesign

Common patternRedesigned approach
A long single page with no sense of how long it will takeFive short steps, a progress bar, and an upfront time estimate
Applicants find out what they need halfway throughA "before you start" checklist so nobody has to stop and come back
Sensitive questions with no explanationA short "why we ask" note right where each question appears
Errors shown only after submit, at the top of the pageSpecific, inline messages next to the field that needs fixing
A generic "thank you" page, then silenceA reference number, a status timeline, and proactive updates

Each of these changes also affects operations: fewer incomplete files, fewer "where's my application?" calls, and a cleaner handoff into onboarding. That connection between the experience and the work behind it is what I map in every engagement.

I'll map where applicants drop off or stall, and what's driving it behind the scenes.
